How to tell if a power strip has surge protection?

A power strip and a surge protector are completely different things, and when you are shopping for some electrical outlets, you might not even notice the difference. You will see that both are available in the stores and online. However, when you only need one, how will you figure out which is which? By learning these quick differences between them, you will be able to decide which one you need and which one you should get.

Function

The function is very important when it comes to differentiating them, which is why you need to learn more about how they function. A surge protector has the job of protecting your devices from any possible voltage spikes. On the other hand, the strips are meant to offer you some additional outlet space. Though both of them tend to look very similar, you should figure out which is what by looking at their packaging. Another thing is that surge protectors have a joule rating which is the unit of measurement used. Power surges can bring forth a lot of damage to your devices and appliances, and the surge protector helps to make sure that it absorbs that charge so that your electronics get protected. However, when it uses up its reservoir, it turns into your regular power strip. Some protectors have a light that indicates that you know when you need to buy a new one.

Usage

Another major difference between the two is how they are used. They have different functions, after all. A surge suppressor is always recommended and is highly dependent on the number of appliances you have and the type they are. Most residential areas would only have two sockets, and that is where you need an extra strip to get more sockets. It is very convenient when you want some extra outlets, and some even have an on/off switch, so you can conserve power easily. However, not all strips have built-in surge protection, so you need to reconsider this when you plan to get your new strip. An easy way to determine this would be to check the label and see if there is a joule rating. When the strip you are buying has a joule rating, this basically means that it has surge protection. But if it does not, then it is just your regular strip.

Cost

Lastly, when it comes to pricing, it can easily be determined that strips are going to be very affordable. You can get one within less than $20. Surge protectors are not so expensive either, so you might want to buy one as well so you can be sure to protect your device. However, if you want to save more, just buy a power strip that has surge protection. It might cost more, but it also has more functions, so you will need to consider that as well. It is going to keep your appliances safe too, so what matters is the cost, right?
