How to choose

Picking the right one.

A few things worth getting right before you buy. None of it is brand-specific — these are the fundamentals of a power strip that lasts.

Outlets & spacing

Count the plugs you actually run at once, then add headroom. Widely spaced or angled outlets matter as much as the count — bulky wall-warts can block neighbors on tightly packed strips.

Surge rating & VPR

Joules tell you absorption capacity, but clamping voltage (VPR) and response time decide what reaches your gear. A lower VPR clamps a spike sooner — read both, not just the headline joule number.

Cord length & gauge

Gauge is the wire thickness. 14AWG copper carries more current with less heat and voltage drop than thinner 16AWG — it matters for power tools and long runs. Pick a length that reaches without coiling.

Mounting

Keyhole slots or a metal housing let a strip live on a wall, bench, or under a desk instead of underfoot. A mountable unit keeps cords off the floor and away from spills and foot traffic.

Pull the cord to the work, let the ratchet lock it at any length, and a controlled spring rewind guides it back when you are done. No coiling, no cord on the floor, no trip hazard between the outlet and the job.

What the SJTOW jacket means

The cord is 14AWG, 3-conductor SJTOW: service-grade, 300V-class, thermoplastic, with an oil-resistant, weather-rated jacket. In practice that means the cord itself shrugs off oil, moisture, and shop abuse. The reel assembly is certified for indoor, dry locations — mount the housing inside and let the cord take the punishment.

The 13A / 1,625W budget, honestly

Both reels are rated 13A at 125V — 1,625 watts — with a built-in 13A breaker and a lighted 3-outlet tap at the end. That covers drills, drivers, sanders, battery chargers, work lights, fans, and most shop vacs. It is not the right tool for 15A saws or heaters; those belong on a wall circuit. At 50 feet, 14AWG copper keeps voltage drop around 3 percent at full load, so tools get the voltage they were designed for.

Ceiling or wall, and which length

The 180-degree swivel bracket mounts to wall or ceiling and pivots so the cord tracks you across the bay — ceiling mounting over the hood or bench center is the classic garage setup. The 50 ft reel is ETL Listed, tested by Intertek to UL 355; the 55 ft reel is UL Listed and adds a 4 ft lead-in and an adjustable cord stopper. Can I use a retractable cord reel outdoors? +

No. The reels are certified for indoor, dry locations. The SJTOW cord jacket is oil- and weather-resistant, but the reel housing itself should be mounted inside.

What can a 13A reel actually run? +

Up to 1,625W total: drills, drivers, sanders, battery chargers, work lights, fans, and most shop vacs. High-draw 15A saws and heaters belong on a wall circuit.

Does the cord lock at any length? +

Yes. The ratchet holds the cord at whatever length you pull, and a short tug releases it for the auto-guided rewind.

Should I mount it on the ceiling or the wall? +

Either. The 180-degree swivel bracket works both ways and pivots to follow you. Ceiling mounting over the center of the bay keeps the cord out of walkways entirely.

Why does 14AWG matter on a 50 ft cord? +

Longer runs lose voltage. 14AWG copper holds the drop to roughly 3 percent at full 13A load, so motors run at the voltage they were designed for instead of browning out.

Are these reels certified? +
